A Description of EZITREE Family History Software
EZITREE is a computer program that has been developed in Australia over the past 20 years for use by family historians who want their computer to store more than just the basic information about their family.
First and foremost, EZITREE is an event-based computer system that enables the accurate recording and retrieval of information in the life of a person. You may record births, baptisms, marriages, deaths and burials, as well as any other event in the life of a person, including education, immigration, convict, housing and land records. From this information, you can create a large variety of family charts and lists that may be viewed on screen, printed, or stored in a separate file.
EZITREE provides you with four different views of your family history information - Events, Lineage, Family Group and Browse. The Event view shows a scrolling list of events in the life of an individual. The Lineage view shows a chart of the ancestors of the current individual up to 5 generations, together with their children. The Family Group view shows details of a person and spouse, together with all of their children. Finally, the Browse view shows a list of names of individuals in alphabetical or record number order, from which you can navigate through the file.
EZITREE can store up to 99,999,999 individuals in each data file and there is no limit to the number of data files you may have, other than the capacity of your hardware. For each individual you may have up to 999 different types of events most of which may be recorded multiple times. Any number of marriages may be recorded for each person with no limit to the number of children per marriage.
EZITREE stores the First and Last Names of each individual in separate fields and generally manages the capitalisation of words for you. EZITREE also provides the facility to store different names for each event of a person such as married women’s names, legal name changes and name variations in source records. You may also select a name as the ‘Display’ name that will be used on all Charts and Reports in place of the default birth name.
Places are stored in EZITREE as three components - Place name, State code and Country code. The Place name field can contain the city or town name together with additional information such as a church name. The State and Country Codes are based on a standard system called Chapman Codes for consistency and these can be entered directly or from a list supplied with EZITREE. When displayed, the full name of the State and Country will generally be shown beside the codes for easy reference.
In EZITREE, dates are entered separately as day, month and year so that partial dates may be stored. Incomplete or approximate dates may be further identified with codes to indicate their type, such as ‘C’ (circa) or ‘A’ (about). In addition, an option exists to fill the missing portion of dates with spaces, dashes, question marks or asterisks.
Storing Other Information
For each event in the life of an individual, EZITREE can also store the Marital Status, Occupation, Religion, Cause of Death, Residence, Notes, Witnesses and Sources. A single input window is used to enter data once an event has been selected for entry or update. Records of new individuals are automatically allocated a new record number together with gender coding (which is based on a large file of first names.) The entry of a full date will cause the day of week to be displayed as well as the age of the individual if the birth date is present. Several lookup windows are also available to assist you select items that require a code such as State or Country.
EZITREE provides the facility for you to store the current home and postal addresses of an individual together with their telephone number. This address may be useful when you are corresponding with other members of your family, or if you are organising a family reunion. You may also record the address of an individual at an event by using the Residence field.
One of the many useful features of EZITREE is the facility to record contacts made with other members of your family. This is in the form of a diary where you can enter the date or type of contact (letter, telephone, etc) and details of the contact, such as the reason the contact was made. You also have the option of printing the contacts providing a record to ensure that replies have been sent.
For each individual in your family history, you may record large amounts of free form text into a memo field. The memo field is like a word processor where you can type information such as obituaries, family stories, and news articles.
|Context-sensitive Help is available from every window
of EZITREE. This means that you only need to press the <Help...>
pushbutton or press the F1 key and
information about that window is displayed. When in Help, you may also
call up a list of all the Help topics and browse through them.
In addition, there are five training guides available in PDF format under the Help menu item which provides hands on assistance with getting started, scanning. multimedia, sources and the family tree book. These documents are also available to download from the EZITREE website.
|EZITREE produces the three main types of genealogical
charts, Ancestors, Descendants and Family Group and these have many
variations and options available. The Ancestors Chart may be created as
Horizontal (or Birth Brief), Vertical, Circular, Narrative, Listing, 6
generations with images, 7 and 8 generations. The Descendants Chart may be created as Tabular, Narrative,
of Descent or Drop Line. The Family Group Charts may be displayed with a
single marriage or all marriages. EZITREE also has a special type of chart
called an Event Chronology Chart. This chart produces a biographical
listing in chronological order of all the events in the life of an
individual or effecting that individual, such as the birth and marriage of
parents and children. You may also include events that have taken place in
All charts and lists are previewed on the screen from where they may be printed or output to one of several file formats including PDF, Microsoft Word DOC, RTF or HTML.
In EZITREE, there are many options for output of different lists of information - Individuals, Statistics, Duplicates, Partial Data and Unused Record Numbers. Individual lists may be in Alphabetical or Numerical (Record Number) order, or you may choose your own order. You may also select what data and which subset of records are to be displayed.
|GEDCOM is the standard for transferring
genealogical data between different family history computer programs, such
as EZITREE and PAF (Personal Ancestral File). EZITREE supports GEDGOM
version 5.5 for both export and import of data.
EZITREE also provides a simple method of comparing the names in GEDCOM files to your own records before actually importing the GEDCOM file. This way to can see if the file has information useful to your family history and if the import will create duplicate records. EZITREE also provides the facility of importing a single person and/or their family into EZITREE from a large GEDCOM file.
The Research Diary allows you to keep track of Sources which you want to research in the future. It makes use of the Repositories recorded with Sources and when you are ready to visit the particular Repository, you can print off a report showing full details of the records to be searched.
The standard input process in EZITREE uses options that create relationships between parents, children and spouses. If you are using EZITREE for researching town histories, single family names, or particular record sources, a special window is available which will speed up your input. This window is called the Data Input window and it allows the entry of basic information about Individuals from single record sources, such as burial registers, birth, death and marriage indexes, and newspaper indexes.
Ever been confused when trying to determine the exact relationship between yourself and somebody in your family? EZITREE provides a built-in function that determines most relationship types (direct and indirect) between any two persons.
EZITREE provides access to images (photos), audio files and video clips stored on your computer. Images are linked to an EZITREE event enabling the images to be shared across other applications. You may also select a 'Display' image that will be shown in the various data views. These 'Display' images can be included with the Birth Brief, Family Group and Event Chronology Charts.
EZITREE sensitively handles defacto relationships and adoptions, and provides for the display of children and siblings (brothers and sisters) from either marriages or relationships. The program is supplied with a full instruction manual containing instructions for installing and configuring EZITREE.
One of the most important aspects of genealogy is the ability to describe the location from where the information has been obtained. EZITREE is now committed to Sources and conversion to v9 will convert any existing References to the new system. In EZITREE, you will have access to a pre-defined list of Australasian Source records and Repositories where multiple Sources may be linked to a single event and the fullest details (including images) recorded.
Family Tree Books
|With the release of version 8.41 of EZITREE, a Family
Tree Book feature has been introduced that will make the production of
printed family histories much easier. With the Family Tree Book
option you can create the format of a family history book that can be
taken directly to a printer and distributed or sold to family members or
other interest parties.
To begin with, the book can contain the usual book-like sections such as Title Page, Preface, Introduction, Dedication, Foreword and Acknowledgements. You may then add any number of EZITREE Family Charts or Freeform Text, which may be composed by you, cut and pasted from other sources, or generated from inside of EZITREE from the memo section of a person, or the unique Biography creator. Finally, you have the option to include images in a number of formats, such as one, two or four images per page, or a full page image. To complete the Family Tree Book, EZITREE will automatically index every name from every chart in the format of a standard book-like Index section and optionally include a Table of Contents and a listing of all References that have been used. You may even add a page for Autographs if you intend the book to be used at a family reunion.
This feature is a major addition to EZITREE and it allows you to achieve a finality with your family research.
EZITREE will run on any Intel or Intel-compatible Pentium type system (166MHz minimum recommended) with Windows98 (service pack 2) or later with a minimum of 256mb of RAM memory (512 preferred). The main program requires approximately 50mb of hard disk space to run and just over 500kb for each 1000 individuals. A colour monitor of at least VGA standard with a minimum 800 x 600 pixels resolution recommended (1024 x768 preferred) and a mouse. A printer is required to produce hardcopies of the charts and reports, however, all output can be viewed on screen in the format in which it would be printed.
EZITREE provides a combination of features, value and performance which will assist the beginner or advanced family historian to create a full record of their family history information as well as providing the basis for writing a full family history.
